DIY Miniature Diamond

Hello there! Welcome to Snowdrop and Company - if we've just met I might have given you my business card with a little DIY project included! Read on for the instructions to complete your very own miniature DIY diamond. This project was inspired by one of my past projects I created for Sugar & Cloth - you can see the original post here.

Materials: 8 long straws (1 1/2" long), 8 short straws ( 3/4" long), 16 pieces silver tape (cut to match each straw), silver cord (about 50" long), scissors, toothpick
Step 1: Carefully peel the backing off of the silver tape and cover the straw, rolling it along your work surface to keep the tape smooth. (If you have trouble separating the sticker from the backing, try using a toothpick or pin on the corner.)
Step 2: Repeat for all straws. If any silver tape hangs off the ends, trim this off.
Step 3: Thread 3 long straws onto the cord and tie them into a triangle. Knot the cord twice, pulling tightly. Trim any excess cord.
Step 4: Thread the cord through one side of the triangle and add two more long straws.
Step 5: Tie off into another triangle, again trimming excess.
Step 6: Do the same for the next two long straws.
Step 7: For the final long straw, thread the cord through the two straws as shown, adding on the final long straw.
Step 8: Tie off and trim excess cord. You'll now have a square-based pyramid.

Step 9: Thread the cord through one of the straws on the base of the pyramid and add 3 short straws.
Step 10: Tie off tightly, and trim excess as before.
Step 11: To form the next facet, thread the cord through one of the short straws you just attached, the neighbouring long straw, and two additional short straws.
Step 12: Tie off and trim.
Step 13: For the next facet, repeat step 11.
Step 14: Tie off and trim.
Step 15: For the final facet, thread the cord through the short straw, long straw, and next short straw adding the last short straw as well.
Step 16: Tie off and trim.
Step 17: To conceal the knots visible at the joints of your diamond, use a toothpick to gently push the knots into the straws.

Bonus: To make this diamond into a cupcake topper, simply hot glue a toothpick to the base.

    1. It was a little mysterious (and confusing looking) at first, wasn't it? So great to meet you too, Grace!

    1. Thanks Thalita! It's really too bad we didn't meet - such a busy day! The good thing is that the supplies for this project are easy to find and affordable too, so you could still give it a shot. :)
