Custom Pet Blankets

Did you know that I have two pet rabbits? We've had them a few months now since adopting them from the Humane Society. Their names are Pancake and Pixie and bonding them has been a bit trickier than expected - you can't just put two unfamiliar rabbits together, you have to slowly introduce them in neutral territory and supervise what we call "bunny dates". These days though, they've been getting along wonderfully!

We had Pancake for a few months before we adopted Pixie to join him, and in that time we bought him the most adorable mini bed from Ikea. Isn't it cute? Since the bed is meant for dolls the blankets it came with were a bit childish, so I decided to give it a little update. So many pet beds and accessories aren't exactly my taste, so I was happy to make my own custom bedding for the rabbits using fabric I ordered online from Minted. There are countless beautiful patterns and colour-ways to choose from! To see more photos and the step by step instructions, click through below.

Supplies:
  • Cotton quilt batting
  • Cotton fabric (I used branch toss and tri tri again)
  • Tape measure
  • Straight pins
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Iron (not pictured)
  • Sewing machine and thread (not pictured)

Step 1: Cut your fabric (two pieces) and batting (one piece) for the pillow - each piece is 13" long and 7" wide. For the mattress layer, similarly you need two fabric layers and one batting layer but they measure 26" long and 13" wide. All these measurements include 1/2" for seam allowance on each seam.

Step 2: For the blanket, I cut one piece of fabric 19" by 19".

Step 3: For the mattress: layer the two fabric pieces right sides together, then put the batting layer underneath. Sew around the edge, using 1/2" for seam allowance, and leave about a 4" opening. Do the same for the pillow.

Step 4: Turn the mattress and pillow so that the right side of the fabric is on the outside again. Use the iron to press.

Step 5: Topstitch around the edge of both the pillow and mattress, sewing the opening closed as you do this. I also added a few horizontal quilt lines into the mattress.

Step 6: Press down the edges of the blanket and pin in place if necessary. Sew along all edges.

And that's it! So simple. I still have some leftover fabric, so I'm planning on making another set in case we get a second bed for Pixie. Look at her, she can't even wait for me to finish making the bedding before cuddling up on it.
